No pain, no $$$ gain, plus Viagra 2.0

Betsy DevineJust in from Joel Spolsky, advice to software startups:

Number One. Don’t start a business if you can’t explain what pain it solves, for whom, and why your product will eliminate this pain, and how the customer will pay to solve this pain.*

I just listened to Scott’s podcast #18* * about blogging Ookles–for a while, we’ll be mostly startup and Web 2.0 stuff. So, since I subscribe to Joel on Software, I thought I’d share that one today.

Plus–even the most born-again 2.0-er will want to read Halley’s hilarious rant on “the Viagra of the current business boom”:

My dad was a Madison Avenue Ad man. He said he wished he had a typewriter that only had 4 or 5 keys. They wouldn’t have QWERTY letters on them, but instead would feature the standard ad man hype lexicon. His typewriter would have “NEW” and “IMPROVED” and “SMOOTHER” and “CREAMIER” keys. And now I can add “WEB 2.0 ENHANCED” to his imaginary typewriter. Yes, he called it what it was — his hypewriter.

* From the Fuzzyblog:

“Betsy here’s the idea – mumble mumble mumble – do you have this point of pain – YES – Cool.”

* * So now I know how to make a “urinal pitch”–but will I ever get to?
